How to Become a Digital Nomad: 5 Steps

Check out the steps below to help you get a comfortable nomadic lifestyle.

5 steps to become a digital nomad

Step 1: Decide on Your Skills and Expertise

The first good step to start your career is to decide on your skills and expertise. What are you good at? What skills do you have that can be used remotely? And most importantly, what do you enjoy doing?

Step 2: Improve Your Skills

Once you have chosen your path, it’s essential to further develop your skills. Take courses and gain experience in your chosen field to make yourself more competitive. There is nothing like “too much knowledge”, especially in the rapidly evolving world of technology. Make sure you can keep up with it!

Step 3: Research Remote Jobs and Careers

After you’ve found your desired work area and developed your skills, it’s time to research remote jobs. Go for specialized websites such as Remote.co and FlexJobs.com. When looking for remote positions, keep in mind that many companies now use attendance tracking tools to manage their distributed teams, so be prepared to adapt to different work management systems.

Furthermore, connect with other nomads to find more job opportunities. Are you embarking on a journey as a freelancer? Look for clients you can offer your services to. Do you already have a job you like? Discuss remote working with your employer, and bring arguments and ways how you can handle your job from abroad.

Step 4: Create a Budget

Once you have a clear direction for your career, start planning your budget. Financial stability is the key to making your stay in a foreign country less stressful. Therefore, determine your monthly expenses in advance and make sure you have enough funds to cover them. No money, no fun. 😉

Step 5: Choose Your Destination

Finally, choose your destination. In addition to nature, cafes, and beaches, consider the quality of life and availability of coworking spaces and Internet access in your chosen country.

Digital Nomad Websites and Stories

Evi and George – an inspiring duo who have found freedom

Evi and George launched their website egtraveltime.com on Webnode and gave us an exclusive interview about the nomadic lifestyle.

What brought you to be a digital nomad?

The nomadic lifestyle was a very big step for us, and it chose us more than we chose it. We were both tired from our 9-5 jobs and doing the same things every day. We also love traveling and adventures, so we were thrilled by this way of living. This process takes time, but it is a fun and exciting journey.

What are you proud of?

We are proud of our relationship the most. We manage to keep our bond strong during the big changes. When you move constantly, sometimes it is hard to let go of the pressure and give time to yourself and your partner only.

What are your plans for the future?

Our plans are literally everything possible and impossible. We want to try all the ways of a nomadic lifestyle (we were doing it slowly until now). The possibilities are out there; it is on us to take advantage of them.

Dorothea – an example of passion and dedication

Even within Webnode, we can find individuals who work remotely and travel the world. One such inspiring person is Doro – a talented copywriter and social content creator based in Bulgaria but working full-time with us.

What do you like the most about your lifestyle?

Two things:

  • The flexibility I have every day. To say: “From next week on, I will work from Portugal and go surfing in the afternoon” is no longer just a dream. To have that possibility is life-changing.
  • Contact and exchange with other nomads. Imagine this mix of people with different expertise, from all stages of life. All have one thing in common: They love to spend time in other places and want to spend that time together.

What was the most challenging for you at the beginning?

I knew Bulgaria before, but living in a place you visited frequently is another level. Accepting that things roll slowly and that one has to simply wait is still tricky for impatient ones like me.

What would you advise others who want to start a nomadic lifestyle?

Just go for it! But be realistic: there is always a risk involved. Also, you might find out that living in a community where people come and go – where you say goodbye often – is challenging.

Building a Digital Nomad Community

Living as a nomadic traveler in an unfamiliar country can make you feel isolated. That’s why it is a good idea to join a nomad community that shares the same values and experiences as you. Establishing friendships and finding a good job will be much easier.

Join Online Communities and Coworking Spaces

You can easily join various online groups and visit coworking spaces where you’ll meet like-minded individuals who share your interests and passions, and work in a professional and motivating environment. So don’t hesitate to connect with others; after all, building relationships on the road is what makes this lifestyle so unique.

Nomadic Traveling and Best Places for Digital Nomads

Feeling indecisive about your travel destination? To begin with, it’s always useful to have some insight into the best cities for this lifestyle.

Chiang Mai, Thailand

Is Thailand on your list? Then, think about Chiang Mai. Low cost of living, excellent food, and beautiful scenery. That is why Chiang Mai is a popular destination for this way of life.

Lisbon, Portugal

Have you considered Lisbon? No? Then we have to insist you do. Lisbon is a vibrant city with a rich history and culture. It’s also a destination that nomads love and has a great community with lots of coworking spaces.

Bali, Indonesia

Of course, Bali must be mentioned as well. This tropical heaven with beautiful beaches and a relaxed atmosphere is well known. Moreover, affordable costs of living make Bali another awesome destination.
