How to Create a Membership Area on Webnode (Step by Step)

Let’s begin creating your premium content:
1. Add or choose the page you want to protect
Log into your Webnode account and open your website project.
You may add restricted pages for members in two ways:
- On existing pages
- Or by adding a page and select member pages
Go to “PAGES” in your dashboard on the top left corner and select the page you like to password protect.

Alternatively, you can add a member area as a new page. Click on “Add menu item” and select “Member area”:

2. Restrict access by setting up member registration and login pages
As soon as you added a new member page or shifted the toggle to the left on an existing page, three different member pages appear in the page menu:

These are:
- Member page (or existing locked page)- page where your exclusive premium content is to be found
- Member login page (with link to registration page)- login page for existing members
- Member registration page– for people to register and become new members
The member page has the padlock symbol to show it is locked. Restricted pages include sub-pages of the page hierarchy:

We recommend hiding the login and registration page from the navigation menu, as you can make your hidden exclusive content page more intriguing by giving it an appealing name like “VIP content”. When non-members clicking on this page, they are automatically directed to the member login page:

Personalize your login and registration pages
You can edit both, member login and member registration page like any other page in the Webnode editor. When initially added, they automatically adapt to the design and layout of your website.
To further enhance the exclusiveness of your content, you can personalize the background image, text, form fields, or buttons of these pages.

Decide what members see after login
Add a link to where the member will be directed to when logging in. Usually this is your member or restricted content page:

Note that “Create new account” button always directs to the member registration page, which can be further edited:

Change the background by clicking on the gear wheel to personalize the registration page. This is a clever way to entice users of what they miss out on, if they don’t sign up.
Tip: We recommend always directing members to your main member content page. If you have several complex pages with subpages, inserting a new landing page that displays an overview of the individual topics linked to the according pages can be useful. 3. Approve and manage your members
The major step in setting up the member only area is to make sure you manually approve each registration. To manually approve access, go to “SETTINGS” on your website project dashboard. Move the toggle for “Approve registrations manually” in the website settings to the right:

The system informs you about each new member registration by automatically sending you emails to your website owner-account. You can change this email address to any other, for example your business email. Your professional email accounts can easily be set up in the website settings.
First confirmation email
The website email address in the settings below is set up to be a no-reply@webnode email. This is the email your membership confirmations are sent out from.
No-reply mails often land in spam. To send confirmations to your members from your business email, you can change this email in the website settings. Note, that you must have an email account linked to your custom domain to be able to change it.
If a visitor finished the registration a confirmation message appears on the registration page:

⚠️ This confirmation screen adapts to your website design and style. Webnode generates it automatically, and you can’t edit or change it.
In addition to this immediate registration confirmation, the soon-to-be member receives an email that the registration is awaiting approval:

The member cannot login and see your content until you give permission.
Approve access
When somebody submitted a registration form, you too receive an email message with the members details and timing of registration:

You can allow access
- directly in the email
- or in the membership management of your project.
For the second option, open your project overview page and scroll down to “Registered Members”. You have a choice between approving or blocking a member. By selecting the tick box to the left, you may also remove the member entirely from your member database.

You can also add members yourself by creating a new member account and assigning a temporary password. Once you’ve done that, you’ll need to inform the new member of their login details and ask them to reset their password.
Second confirmation
As soon as you granted access, members receive a second confirmation email stating that their membership is approved. They now can log in and enjoy your premium website content.
