The Top Mistakes Made on Business Websites

A common saying on the Internet goes like this: If you’re not online you don’t exist. Businesses know about this and make sure they have a website to show off. Many companies, however, unknowingly sabotage their website. The weakest points can already be found on the homepage, but problems don’t end there!



1. Begin by asking WHY

The most basic problem is that the homepage doesn’t clearly say why the site was created and what it provides the visitor. On one website we found the following:

“Welcome to our online store xxx. Our company is the exclusive importer of several outstanding products that are not represented in the local market. We hope that by this, you’ll like our offer. “

The text continues in a similar manner. To find out what products are excellent to buy in their eshop, we literally had to search the entire website.

Simplify your life and serve customers what’s most important to them already on the home page. What would you like to offer on your website? The following table lists examples of different fields, and the ideal content of their landing pages.

2. 5 year old news?

Another problem that plagues many websites is out of date information published. We randomly selected 200 websites created at Webnode to see how the news section is used. Only 38% of sites contained regularly updated sections. The rest either didn’t provide any news at all, or was never updated.

Forgetting this part of the site is not a good move. It gives an impression of unprofessionalism. And that’s just the first small step to doubting your offer and timeliness of the information on your website. And to make matters worse, lack of news doesn’t help in optimizing your site for search engines. You also target a narrower scope with the keywords.

3. Your business card without contact information

Imagine that you get a business card, where there is no address, e-mail address or telephone number. You’d think it’s a bad joke. The same goes for websites. The address, phone number, e-mail address (or a completed contact form) are essential. Unfortunately, some companies are still reluctant to add contact information on their sites and still many others have outdated contact information. However, this raises suspicion in those clients who want to inquire about products.

4. Grammatical errers can scare anyone

The biggest nightmare for visitors are grammatical errors. Some people are particularly sensitive to errors and may be frustrated throughout the whole time they’re browsing your website.

At the same time, avoiding mistakes isn’t hard. Just prepare the text in Word, where misspelled words will jump out. You can also ask someone for help with corrections. A fresh look can result in finding errors which are located in the text.

5. No references

Another very common mistake is not adding a “Reference” section. A study in The Trust Factor, by the company, for example, found that consumers have difficulty focusing on a large amount of information. Information is filtered online based on trust. A business therefore has a difficult task: building consumer confidence. This can be done not only with a website, but especially with a references section.
