5 Steps to Successful Link Building

December 5th, 2019

Link building, or building backlinks is the continuous activity of gathering links that point to your website. Link building is the way to go if you want to strengthen the position of your site in search engines and increase the number of visitors coming to your site. We’ll show you how to successfully start off on the right foot!

There are many options and methods for getting backlinks. Let’s take a look together at some of them.

1. Natural Links

The best, yet hardest link building method is getting natural links. This basically means that people visit your website, really like your content and begin to refer to it in their own articles or on social networks. You earn those links mostly by creating great content. This link building method can be facilitated, but you’ll never be completely in charge of it.

You can encourage building natural backlinks by creating case studies, tutorials or infographics (graphic visual representation of data). Infographics in particular are attractive for users and have great sharing potential.

2. Partnership

Another link building method is to exchange backlinks with a website that’s closely in scope with what you offer or even with your direct competitors if they’re willing to do so. Try a link exchange with your supplier. For example, if you own a shop that sells furniture, the furniture supplier places a link to your shop on their website. You, in turn, can place a link of the supplier on your website. Such an agreement is perfect for both parties. In a partnership, always think not only about what a partner can offer you, but what you can offer a potential partner.

3. Directories and catalogs

You’ll find thousands of directories online, where you can submit your website. Choose the right directory carefully. For local business, we recommend starting with the most-visited directories, such as Google My Business or Bing Places. Americans still use the online version of Yellow Pages when searching for a company. Select those directories that are relevant to the content of your page. If your website falls under a niche, there might even be a directory created specifically for that niche. Just steer clear of spammy-looking directories with hundreds of random links.

4. Writing Articles

Another way of getting backlinks is to cooperate with blogs that cater a similar subject as your website. If you own a furniture store, you can, for example, try to establish cooperation with blogs that deal with choosing design furniture, or interior design. The blog owner can either offer a topic where he writes about you alone, or you can offer to write the article directly for him and thus reducing his workload. An offer may not always include good quality content and be careful about excessive advertising. Having articles posted on relevant blogs shows that you really understand your field, plus you get backlinks and thus drive more traffic to your site.

5. Internal Links

You can optimize the links that lead from one part of your website to the other. We recently wrote an article that explains internal link building in great detail. This is definitely useful for online stores which can include similar products on a page displaying merchandise. For example, on a page where you offer pants, add a link to belts. It will help not only your clients, but you as well, as you build links and might increase the sales of other products on your page.
